Today is the first day of Speak Out with your Geek Out.
Over 2,000 people have committed to sharing their enthusiasm and their love of their hobbies and vocations for an entire week of geek. Parents and children, friends and strangers, fans and creators are participating by blogging, mentoring, listening, speaking and sharing.
An entire community has built up around the idea that we can be positive role models. Positive. Before the week even began, people have reinforced the message that being happy is a choice and we are empowered to be who we are when we're together. Or simply: there is strength in numbers and even when we feel like the odd man out? We are not alone.
I feel this is our chance to prove that -- once and for all -- to each other. That we can inspire and uplift. That tolerance is possible, provided we remember to be tolerant of other people. That our emotions are what bind us together and labels are what keep us apart.
Please, do not hesitate to read and digest the articles on this site. There are contributions from many people and several words of wisdom and encouragement to be had.
To stand up and be counted, I encourage you to post your contributions to Speak Out in the comments below. The Twitter hashtag is: #speakgeek
Keep your comments G-Rated and focus on the positive. Have a great week!

Here's my first contribution :)

Here is mine:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theskyfullofdust.co.uk/?p=1249
My geeky hobby is volunteering to work at science fiction conventions, particularly in heavier capacities. I'm spoiled to cons; I couldn't go as a regular attendee anymore. I'm too used to having full access to everything through working for the con. I've driven as much as 1700 miles to work a con! :)

My entry about how juggling for over 30 years has affected my life is here. I'm taking a social media break and won't be following things on Twitter, but I look forward to hearing about others' geeky hobbies.
ReplyDeleteLike Simon above, Dungeons and Dragons also had a huge effect on me. It was an escape, a focus, and it kept me out of trouble.
Here is my contribution, about role-playing games,

ReplyDeleteHere's the first of my #speakgeek posts - a review of a nonfiction book and some musings on why I love nonfiction books in particular right now
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time narrowing it down to one geekdom, so I chose the most unusual one and found a story to share, because writing is one of them and it seemed a way to combine the two. I think it's a wonderful thing you're doing here :)
ReplyDeletehttp://hierath.wordpress.com/2011/09/12/speak-out-with-your-geek-out/
My first post of the week is about what I love and what I hate about fantasy fashion, especially as a plus-size woman. I'd love to hear what others think!

I geeked out about bugs here and I have more posts planned on other things.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I just wanted to share my LJ, I don't post often but I like to sometimes talk about the geeky things I find interesting, books, shows, games even events. My most current post is my Speak Out with Your Geek Out story. I hope you all find it interesting, thanks!

My first of five planned Geek-outs...
ReplyDeletehttp://simp.ly/publish/JD0mzJ
My first contribution...
ReplyDeleteI Am A Geek
Among other things (Star Trek, Star Wars, RPGs, etc), I am a huge Doctor Who geek. I've been watching the show since I was in Junior High School, and they were running it on the local PBS station (WLIW), and was overjoyed to see the show return in 2005. I originally started with Jon Pertwee's stuff way back when, but I think Matt Smith is up there as one of my current favorites (along with Tom Baker, of course). More recently, I've been doing everything I can to get all my friends into the show (both the new and old runs) for years now.

ReplyDeleteHmmph. Only removed the last one as it wouldn't let me edit to put in a link.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this is a contribution and relates to RPGs and boardgames, but is merely the tip of geekiness iceberg.

ReplyDeleteDay 1, here we go.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nakedhobo.com/blog/?p=951
My first post this week is in the typical casual game review flavor——however, it's definitely not your ordinary casual game, and the rest of the week will broaden out into the general gamer's domain (tomorrow's post is all about our favorite subject: crushes!), discussing the reasons why we love games and what makes a well-designed title.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget, I'm totally able and willing to host any guest posts on the subject. :D

ReplyDeleteHere is my speak out: http://www.facebook.com/anna.garces/posts/2036453195928
ReplyDeleteAnd for the wary here is what was said:
Speak Out with Your Geek Out, Day 1: I've been gaming since I was 8 years old. Nes, snes, genesis, psx, and on and on. Growing up I was greatly influenced by anime and manga in my art style. Go Voltron! Sailor Moon! Ranma 1/2! I draw fan art and I write fanfiction and hope one day to settle down* with a manly geek of my own. I still play games, attend midnight releases, and would really love to participate in a d&d pnp session.

My first post: http://davedujour.dreamwidth.org/505305.html
ReplyDeleteI am 42 years old and I've been gaming in various forms for 20 years. Original D&D-er. I've played just about anything you can think of. I collect miniatures, and model kits. I'm a Star Wars and Star Trek fan. I'm a fan of all sorts of science fiction and 'kaiju' movies. In fact, just about any monster movie is OK in my book. I've taken my geekdom onto the paintball field by being a role player in numerous scenario paintball games, which has created a fire in me for costuming/cosplay. We who are of the geek, salute you!
ReplyDeleteBetter late than never? Just posted the first of five planned SOWYGO posts - today's topic? NOMS! (ie: Food Geekery!) http://www.jesshartley.com
ReplyDeleteI write fiction, love reading, beading and never weeding, and am 100% proud to be a geek. Giant robots and anime rock. I love comics and SF and collecting plush cthulhus. I am also a fount of useless trivial knowledge and an analyst. Rather laugh with the geeks than cry with the popular!

History. I didn't list "history" among my interests until my wife pointed out to me that I had taught a middle-school class about the Cold War era [primarily by showing them "Dr. Strangelove" ("This is what we feared") and "2001" ("This is what we hoped for")], had written a series of alternate-history stories, was always surprising people with tidbits of historical trivia....

My geek hobby? Take a look!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgmZtkg_o8A&feature=share
In my free time I make anime cosplay and dance to pop music in front of other anime fans. I role play, write fan fiction, run fan fiction contests at anime conventions, play video games, read comic books, and watch anime. I like being a geek, because being a geek finally made me feel good about being me. And next year, I'm going be marry my wonderful geeky fiance who not only brought my inner geek out, but helped me accept myself. Being a geek not only made me comfortable with myself, but gave me a place in the world that I was happy with. And I am happy with my life.
I also had wonderful geek role models. My mother showed me Star Trek and always had Science Fiction novels around. My aunt who passed almost a year ago collected Barbie dolls and went to Sci-fi conventions. They were always strong women who didn't care what other people thought, they just loved themselves. And I have been blessed to have them as role models in my life.
