Stand Up, Cheer and Be Counted

Good Morning,

Today is the first day of Speak Out with your Geek Out.

Over 2,000 people have committed to sharing their enthusiasm and their love of their hobbies and vocations for an entire week of geek. Parents and children, friends and strangers, fans and creators are participating by blogging, mentoring, listening, speaking and sharing.

An entire community has built up around the idea that we can be positive role models. Positive. Before the week even began, people have reinforced the message that being happy is a choice and we are empowered to be who we are when we're together. Or simply: there is strength in numbers and even when we feel like the odd man out? We are not alone.

I feel this is our chance to prove that -- once and for all -- to each other. That we can inspire and uplift. That tolerance is possible, provided we remember to be tolerant of other people. That our emotions are what bind us together and labels are what keep us apart.

Please, do not hesitate to read and digest the articles on this site. There are contributions from many people and several words of wisdom and encouragement to be had.

To stand up and be counted, I encourage you to post your contributions to Speak Out in the comments below. The Twitter hashtag is: #speakgeek

  3. My geeky hobby is volunteering to work at science fiction conventions, particularly in heavier capacities. I'm spoiled to cons; I couldn't go as a regular attendee anymore. I'm too used to having full access to everything through working for the con. I've driven as much as 1700 miles to work a con! :)

    Like Simon above, Dungeons and Dragons also had a huge effect on me. It was an escape, a focus, and it kept me out of trouble.

  17. Among other things (Star Trek, Star Wars, RPGs, etc), I am a huge Doctor Who geek. I've been watching the show since I was in Junior High School, and they were running it on the local PBS station (WLIW), and was overjoyed to see the show return in 2005. I originally started with Jon Pertwee's stuff way back when, but I think Matt Smith is up there as one of my current favorites (along with Tom Baker, of course). More recently, I've been doing everything I can to get all my friends into the show (both the new and old runs) for years now.

  55. Video gaaaaames! ♥ I love them. Have since I was little. Actually playing Lunar SSS right now :3 I love older RPG's like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Cross, and Final Fantasy.   60. I am 42 years old and I've been gaming in various forms for 20 years. Original D&D-er. I've played just about anything you can think of. I collect miniatures, and model kits. I'm a Star Wars and Star Trek fan. I'm a fan of all sorts of science fiction and 'kaiju' movies. In fact, just about any monster movie is OK in my book. I've taken my geekdom onto the paintball field by being a role player in numerous scenario paintball games, which has created a fire in me for costuming/cosplay. We who are of the geek, salute you!

    In my free time I make anime cosplay and dance to pop music in front of other anime fans. I role play, write fan fiction, run fan fiction contests at anime conventions, play video games, read comic books, and watch anime. I like being a geek, because being a geek finally made me feel good about being me. And next year, I'm going be marry my wonderful geeky fiance who not only brought my inner geek out, but helped me accept myself. Being a geek not only made me comfortable with myself, but gave me a place in the world that I was happy with. And I am happy with my life.
    I also had wonderful geek role models. My mother showed me Star Trek and always had Science Fiction novels around. My aunt who passed almost a year ago collected Barbie dolls and went to Sci-fi conventions. They were always strong women who didn't care what other people thought, they just loved themselves. And I have been blessed to have them as role models in my life.

  134. My idea of a rockin' Friday night is drinking coffee while coding in Flash or painting with my Wacom tablet and listening to Radiolab or some other educational podcast. Don't tell me I should be out having fun. This IS fun!

    I'm currently teaching myself German while creating web-based interactive lessons on it, creating a genealogical web site of my family (including photo albums), and replaying Oblivion.

  138. Magic the Gathering, I think, is the way in which I'm most conventionally geeky.

    Guitar geekery is my big passionate thing - specifically pedals. Obscure, ultra noisy, boutique and home-brewed pedals and unconventional noise makers fill a very special cockle of my heart. My collection is massive, I can (and will) pontificate on it at the drop of a hat. It's the best.
